Autologous chondrocyte implantation is a two-stage operative procedure. The first procedure is performed arthroscopically in less than 30 minutes then a small piece of articular cartilage from the patient's knee, typically the size of one or two.
ACI is a two-stage procedure first arthroscopic assessment of the chondral injury is done and biopsy is done to harvest approximately 200 to 300 mg of cartilage, followed by a commercial enzymatic digestion and cell expansion in monolayer culture with cryopreservation of the cells.

Pain, swelling and bruising are very normal after ACL surgery applying ice can be a relief and elevating the affected legs on pillow will also help. You should place two pillows on your foot or ankle and not below your knees.
You should immediately contact your doctor if you have high fever above 100 degree, excessive bleeding, lot of pain or swelling in the calf and infection.
After ACL surgery patient needs to take 8 weeks off so that the new cells can mature. In starting few weeks patient has to use crutches. There may be weight bearing restrictions for six to eight weeks and after three to six months you can increase the load and intensity of your training.
