You will need to undergo several tests before bone marrow transplantation. You have to stay in hospital for about weeks so you have to make your arrangements accordingly.
Bone marrow donation usually takes around one to two hours, once the bone marrow is collected you will be taken to the recovery room till the effect of anaesthesia wears off.
Bone marrow cells will be taken from the donor before one or two days of the procedure. Cells are either collected from the hip bones through a needles, you will not feel any pain during the procedure because you will be under the effect of anaesthesia. In the other process five shots of stem cells are given from the bone marrow to the bloodstream, blood is taken out intravenously and a centrifuge machine separates the white blood cells containing stem cells. Central venous cathether is installed in upper right portion of your chest so that fluid containing new stem cells moves directly to your heart and disperse throughout whole body. They flow through blood and into bone marrow. Port is left in place through which you will be given blood, liquids and nutrients.

Once your bone marrow transplant is finished you will be needed to stay in hospital for few weeks while your stem cells begin to settle and it starts the production of new blood cells. During this interval you may experience some symptoms such as weakness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite.
You will be needed to stay in hospital for about three to four weeks after bone marrow transplant.
The success of bone marrow transplant depends on the matching of the donor and the recipient. State of your engraftment you will be monitored regularly which is completed after 10 to 28 days of bone marrow transplant. Its first sign is increasing number of white blood cells
