Wrist joint replacement is known as wrist arthroplasty in which the diseased or the damaged part of the joint with an artificial joint and it creates a stable, pain free joint which has a functional range of movement.
Wrist joint replacement provides you pain relief and functional motion in around 80% of cases and in around 97% in resurfacing of implants. Better result is seen with improving the distal component and minimally resecting the distal radius.
Yes, people can get their wrist replaced, even though joint replacement surgery is less common than hip or knee replacement surgery but it can be done if arthritis do not respond to other treatments. The damaged part of the wrist bone is removed and then replaced by an artificial component.
If the cartilage is being damaged by any injury, any infection or any disease then the bones will get rubbed against each other which causes wearing off the bone ends and it results in gradual wearing of the cartilages which are covering the bones.
Symptoms of wrist joint replacement incudes pain, stiffness, swelling, reduced movement and clicking, cracking and grinding sound of wrist.
Wrist joint replacement surgery is being done under general anaesthesia and it takes less than two hours to be done.
Wrist joint arthroplasty is being diagnosed by a proper medical history, physical examination and x ray examination. If loss of joint space is seen between the bones then it is needed to be replaced. Some other blood tests may be needed to check which factor has caused it.
In wrist joint replacement a longitudinal incision is being made on the back of the wrist line in the third metacarpal and the tendons are then moved away to expose the wrist joint and with the help of a surgical saw the damaged joint portion of the arm bones are removed and the first row of the carpal bones are also removed. The radius bone is made hollowed and a radial component of the prosthesis is being fixed inside the bone and cemented over it. According to the prosthesis design the carpal is being placed in the remaining row of carpal bones. The joint capsules are sutured in the last, the muscles and the tendons are repaired and kept back in place. At last the incision are closed and a wrist bandage is being applied.
Complete recovery of wrist joint replacement takes around three to four months, some patients wear cast for few weeks after surgery and after that they wear splints for eight weeks. Other than it you may need physical therapy to improve your movement and wrist strength after surgery.
The recovery after wrist surgery takes around four to twelve weeks, most people get healed within a month and they can start their rehabilitation after that. During your healing period you should wear your braces and casts as told by your surgeon
Some of the complications of wrist joint arthroplasty are infection, dislocation of wrist and the damage to the nerves and blood vessels
