9-Month-Old Saved from Fatal Congenital Heart Defects Through the Double Procedure of VSD closure and Aortic Arch Repair at Jaypee Hospital

• A ventricular septal defect was detected before 9-months-old Ahana was even born.
• As the condition was treatable, her parents went on with the delivery.
• But it was found out later that there were even more complications due to coarctation of the aorta (C.O.A).
• It is a cardiac defect in which the aorta is narrower than usual affecting the blood flow in the body leading to PAH.
• Thereafter, 14 day old baby Ahana was kept on ventilator for a month.
• Although a balloon dilation of aorta was performed, her condition deteriorated due to infections she caught in the hospital.
• A medical management was attempted to cure the sepsis but was futile.
• As surgery was complicated and involved high risks her parents could not find a proper hospital where her treatment could be done.
• Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department at Jaypee Hospital in Noida, Dr. Rajesh Sharma and his team finally performed a VSD closure and Aortic Arch Repair to save the baby.
• The six hour long surgery proved to be successful but the weakened condition of Ahana made the doctors to keep her on ventilator and a tracheostomy was performed.
• It is on the 35th day post surgery that little Ahana was taken out of the ICU and is now ready to be discharged from the hospital.
