Soft Tissue Cancer
It is an uncommon type of cancer that begins in the tissues that connect, assist and surround other body structures. This comprises muscle, fat, tendons blood vessels, nerves, and the lining of joints. There are about 50 subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma. Some types highly affect children while others affect mostly adults. These tumors are generally difficult to diagnose as they may be mistaken for many other types of growth.
Soft tissue sarcoma is likely to occur anywhere in the body. The most common types occur in the arms, legs, or abdomen. Surgical removal is generally the most common treatment. Radiation and chemotherapy may also be recommended depending on its size, location, aggressiveness, and type of the tumor.
Symptoms
- A noticeable lump or swelling
- Pain when the tumor presses on nerves or muscles
Causes
In most cases, the cause is not clear. Cancer generally occurs when cells develop errors in DNA. Due to these errors, the cells grow and keep on dividing uncontrollably. The accumulating abnormal cells then take the form of a tumor.
Diagnosis And Treatment
An imaging test that includes X-ray, computerized tomography scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography help in determining the type of cancer. When soft tissue cancer is suspected the doctor will conduct any one biopsy from a core needle biopsy or surgical biopsy.
Treatment
Surgery
- It is a common treatment for soft tissue sarcoma that involves removing cancer and healthy tissue surrounding it.
- When it affects the arms and legs, radiation and chemotherapy may be an option to shrink the tumor to avoid amputation.
Radiation Therapy
This involves treating cancer with high-powered beams of energy in different ways. Options include:
- Pre-surgery
- During surgery
- Post-surgery
Chemotherapy
It is a drug treatment that makes use of chemicals to kill cancer cells. It can be regulated by pill or through a vein. Some forms of soft tissue sarcoma respond better to chemotherapy than compared to other measures.
Targeted Drug Treatment
Some types of soft tissue sarcoma have particular characteristics in their cells. They can be attacked through targeted drug treatments. These medicines aren’t toxic and work better than chemotherapy.
