What is deep brain stimulation ( DBS )?
Deep brain stimulation is a procedure that involves implanting a device that transmits electrical signals to the parts of the brain that control movement. Deep in the brain, electrodes are implanted and linked to a stimulator device. A neurostimulator, like a cardiac pacemaker, utilises electric pulses to control brain activity. Parkinson's disease, dystonia, or essential tremor can cause tremor, slowness, stiffness, and walking difficulties, which can be improved by DBS. People who get successful DBS may be able to reduce their drug use and enhance their quality of life.
A DBS system has four parts:
- A lead is a tiny cable that is inserted into the region of your brain that is generating symptoms.
- A pulse generator provides small electrical signals to the lead, similar to a pacemaker.
- A wire that links the pulse generator to the lead.
- The only part outside your body is a remote control to program the system
How is the Surgery Performed?
The surgery is performed by the best neurosurgeons in India. The lead will be implanted in your brain, and the pulse generator will be implanted in your chest. They're sometimes done at the same time, but the lead is usually put in first. The pulse generator a few weeks later.
