For several months, Mr. Daniel Ashenafi Gezaw, a 48-year-old man from Ethiopia, was living with persistent lower back pain that gradually started affecting his daily life. Walking, sitting for long periods, and bending became increasingly difficult and uncomfortable. Medical investigations revealed degenerative disc disease at the L2-L3 and L3-L4 levels of the lower spine. The discs between these vertebrae had worn down over time, putting pressure on the surrounding nerves and causing ongoing pain and discomfort.

With his doctors recommending spine surgery, Mr. Daniel and his family began exploring treatment options in India. However, travelling to another country for major surgery brought several concerns.

Mr. Daniel was unsure about which hospital and doctor to choose, how to arrange a medical visa, where to stay, and how to manage treatment in an unfamiliar city far from home. At this point, a local contact in Ethiopia introduced Mr. Daniel to Vaidam Health, a medical travel facilitator that helps international patients plan and coordinate treatment all over the world.

Mr. Daniel shared his medical reports with the Vaidam team, who sought opinions from experienced spine specialists at leading hospitals in India. He received expert treatment opinions, a suggested treatment plan, and estimated treatment costs, helping him and his family understand their options before travelling.

The Vaidam team discussed the available options with Mr. Daniel, answering his questions about the surgery, hospital stay, costs, recovery, and other aspects of his treatment journey. After carefully considering the recommendations, Mr. Daniel chose Dr. Manoj Miglani at Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

Once the treatment was finalised, Vaidam assisted Mr. Daniel with the practical arrangements for his medical trip. The support included a medical visa invitation letter, airport pickup, accommodation assistance, appointment scheduling, hospital coordination, interpreter and daily assistance, and a dedicated case manager.

Mr. Daniel travelled to New Delhi with his sister, Senayt Tilahun Tesema. The Vaidam team received them at the airport, helped them settle in, and coordinated his consultation with Dr. Manoj Miglani. Following a detailed evaluation and the required pre-surgery investigations, Mr. Daniel was admitted on 20 August 2026 for his spine surgery.

He underwent L2-L3 and L3-L4 decompression and fusion at Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital. During the procedure, the surgical team performed decompression to relieve pressure on the affected spinal nerves and then carried out fusion to join and stabilise the affected vertebrae. His recovery in the hospital progressed as planned, and Mr. Daniel was discharged on 24 August 2026, four days after his admission.

Following his discharge, Mr. Daniel continued his recovery in Delhi and was advised to undergo physiotherapy for two months. Before travelling back to Ethiopia, he attended a follow-up consultation with Dr. Manoj Miglani, where his recovery was reviewed and further guidance was provided.

During his approximately one-month stay in India, the Vaidam team remained in regular contact with Mr. Daniel and his sister, helping coordinate appointments and addressing their concerns throughout the treatment journey.

With his surgery completed and a clear recovery plan in place, Mr. Daniel returned to Ethiopia to continue his rehabilitation.

Reflecting on his experience of undergoing spine surgery in India, he shared:

“I was worried about having a surgery so far from home, but Vaidam made the whole process simple. From our first discussion, the team explained everything clearly and helped me choose the best doctor for my condition. They arranged my visa letter, airport pickup and stay, and they were always available for my sister and me. Dr. Miglani and the hospital team took very good care of me. I am truly grateful to Vaidam for their support throughout my treatment.”

For Mr. Daniel, the journey from Ethiopia to India was not only about undergoing spine surgery, but also about finding the right medical team and receiving coordinated support throughout an unfamiliar treatment journey. With his treatment completed, Mr. Daniel continues his recovery with physiotherapy and follow-up care.

Vaidam Health wishes Mr. Daniel a smooth recovery, renewed strength, and many active and comfortable years ahead with his family in Ethiopia.
