- Jupiter Hospital, Pune, achieved a significant milestone by performing a live liver donor transplant without requiring a blood transfusion. It is a revolution in terms of surgical excellence.
- A 52-year-old man has been suffering from end-stage liver disease since 2019. The patient’s organ was functioning at only 10 to 20% capacity. A liver transplant was the only option to save his life. His wife readily agreed to donate her liver.
- Usually, multiple blood transfusions are required, especially in cases of liver transplants, where patients have impaired blood clotting.
- Dr. Abhishek Yadav, Director of HPB Surgery and Liver Transplant Surgeon at Jupiter Hospital said, “Living donor liver transplantation involves the removal of a portion of a healthy donor’s liver, which then regenerates in both the donor and the recipient. While this procedure has revolutionized the treatment of end-stage liver diseases, it has traditionally been associated with challenges such as significant blood loss and the subsequent need for blood transfusions.”
- The couple hailing from Karad successfully underwent the surgery on 4 December 2023. Both donor and recipient are recovering well after the transplant.
- It is a breakthrough in liver transplant surgery as the patient did not require any ventilation post-surgery.
- The procedure has significantly increased patient safety and success rate. It also has reduced the risks associated with blood transfusion.
- The success of this bloodless living donor liver transplant is attributed to the combined efforts of the entire transplant team at Jupiter Hospital, consisting of skilled surgeons, hepatologists, anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, and nurses.
