India’s First Gold Coated Implant for Knee Replacement Procedure at GMC

Goa Medical College (GMC) became the first in the country to use a gold-coated implant for knee replacement procedures, as stated by Dr. Shivanand Bandekar.

A 50-year-old female patient underwent knee replacement surgery at GMC by Dr. Shivanand and Dr. Neil Sheth, a renowned Orthopedic Surgeon.
According to Dr. Bandekar, the new implants were made by a domestic manufacturer as part of the Make In India effort. Thus, supply shouldn't be an issue. An implant with a gold coating lowers friction and leads to faster adoption of the implant into the body.
He also explained that this procedure is done with a new method called a window operation.
They are the first in the country to have the new technology, which offers implant longevity and a better quality of life to patients.
Banderker said, "A new implant will cost less than Rs 1 lakh, maybe Rs 80,000, and it has longer utility and is expected to last for 30 years than other implants, which last for only 15-20 years."
