Ovarian Cysts

The two ovaries that each woman has is about the size and shape of almond on both the side of the uterus. Eggs develop and mature in the ovaries and are released in monthly cycles during the childbearing years. Some women develop ovarian cysts at times. Most ovarian cysts pursue little or no discomfort and are mostly harmless. The majority of them vanish without treatment in a few months. Some serious symptoms are seen in ovarian cysts that get ruptured. A regular pelvic exam is a must to protect your health and know the symptoms that can signal a potentially serious problem.

Symptoms

  • Pelvic pain that feels like a dull or sharp ache in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst
  • Full or heavy abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Sudden, severe abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Pain with fever or vomiting
  • Cold
  • Clammy skin
  • Rapid breathing
  • Light-headedness
  • Weakness

Diagnosis

  • Pregnancy test
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Laparoscopy
  • Blood test

Treatment

  • Watchful Waiting - In many cases, the doctor generally recommends waiting and re-examine the cyst whether it goes away within a few months. In case no symptoms are seen an ultrasound is best to show a simple, small, fluid-filled cyst. Follow-up pelvic ultrasounds at intervals are required to see if the cyst changes in size.
  • Medication - Hormonal contraceptives including birth control pills help to stop cysts from recurring. Although birth control pills won't shrink or reduce the size of an existing cyst.
  • Surgery – For large cysts removing them becomes quite necessary.  Your doctor might also suggest removing a cyst that is large, non-functional, is growing continuously, disturbing the menstrual cycles, and causes pain. Some cysts can be removed without removing the ovary while some suggest removing the affected ovary and leaving the other intact.

Take Away

When a cystic mass is cancerous the doctor will refer a gynaecologic cancer specialist. There might be a need to remove the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, chemotherapy, or radiation. It's better to consult an experienced gynic for the same. You can contact Dr. IIa Tyagi one of the best Gynaecologists in Mumbai working at Apollo Spectra Hospital.
