- A 39-year-old was cured of a rare condition of Oncogenic Osteomalacia at Apollo Hospital, Chennai.
- The patient has been suffering acute pain for the past two years as none of the treatments could resolve his medical case.
- Consequently, by the time arrived at Apollo Hospital, he was wheel-chaired.
- Because of his long medical records of unresolved treatments a detailed clinical work-up was done.
- With a very low serum phosphorus and hydroxy vitamin D levels, endocrinologist, Dr. N.K Narayana diagnosed him with Oncogenic Osteomalacia.
- This condition occurs due to a tiny benign tumour which is often difficult to locate.
- These tumours are usually found in the feet, hands and in the facial region.
- Dr Chidambaranathan, Radiologist located a small tumor in the right trochanter which was found to be metabolically very active.
- This kind of benign tumour is pathologically known as "atypical spindle cell tumour".
- After much investigations, the patient underwent surgery and was almost relieved of the excruciating pain he was going through.
- Later, another tumour relapsed right below the place where the previous one had been.
- He has been put under long acting Octreotide injections now so that further development of the tumour can be curtailed and it can be cured.
