Overview of Knee Replacement Surgery
Also known as Arthroplasty, it is a procedure that involves cutting away a damaged bone and cartilage from the kneecap, shinbone, and thighbone. It is then replaced with an artificial joint made of metal alloys, polymers, and high-grade plastics. Severely diseased knee joints can restore their function and it helps in relieving pain. Your Orthopaedic surgeon assesses your knee’s range of motion, strength, stability, and extent of damage to determine whether knee surgery is right for you or not. Your knee replacement prostheses and surgical techniques are finalized based on your age, weight, knee size and shape, activity level, and overall health.
Why it is necessary?
After years of medications, therapy, injections, and non-surgical treatments still you experience unbearable pain in your knees then, Knee replacement is the last option left. You may feel pain in walking, standing from a chair, climbing stairs, or even at rest. Severe knee pain, stiffness, loss of mobility from a knee injury, or arthritis also requires knee surgery. It’s major surgery and requires a good amount of time and money. You need to do prior planning for the surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
This major procedure requires both pre and post preparations. You have to be sure about your fitness and make arrangements for a lengthy recovery.
- A complete physical examination including blood, urine, and heart test will be conducted by your doctor to verify that you are healthy enough for the surgery. This generally takes place a few weeks before the procedure.
- You will need a helping hand to assist you with chores and household tasks when you have limited mobility. Up to several days after the surgery, you will need someone to help bathe, dress and groom.
- Few weeks after the surgery won’t be that easy. You have to ensure a safe and easy way to navigate around. You can prior install a shower seat, shower rail, and a toilet seat raiser in the bathroom.
- Your doctor needs to be informed about all medications and dietary supplements that you take. If you are prone to any allergy or long-term disease should also be discussed beforehand.
How the surgery takes place?
The surgery is performed in a hospital or an ambulatory surgery center. The three-step process includes:
- Anesthesia – Before the procedure, you will be given general, spinal, or epidural anesthesia. The general one puts you to sleep while the other two numbs the lower extremities. Spinal or epidural anesthesia keeps you awake during the surgery.
- Procedure – An incision will be made over the knee joint. Then the surgeon will access the joint and remove damaged or degenerated bone from the joint surface. It will be resurfaced with metal and plastic knee implants. The surgeon will rotate and ensure movement once the implants are in place.
- Closure – The incision will be closed by stitches or staples once your surgeon is satisfied with the procedure.
