Frozen Shoulder and its Causes
Also known as Adhesive Capsulitis is a disorder that causes pain, stiffness, and loss of normal range of motion in the shoulder. It can be a serious condition and gets worse with time when left untreated. Most people ages between 40 to 60 years are seen affected by this. Its treatment involves a range of motion exercises, corticosteroids, numbing medications, and arthroscopic surgery in rare cases. Its reoccurrence is unusual but some people are seen developing it on the opposite shoulder. It tends to occur when the capsule where the bones, ligaments, and tendons are encased, becomes thick resulting in tightening around the shoulder restricting its movement. When your shoulder remains immobilized for a long period due to any surgery or facture can cause a frozen shoulder. Consult orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon for this condition.
Symptoms
Frozen shoulder develops slowly and can be felt by following symptoms:
- Freezing stage – You will feel pain in the shoulder and you will observe its range of motion is getting limited.
- Frozen stage – Pain may reduce during this stage but using your shoulder becomes difficult.
- Thawing stage – Improvement is seen in this stage in a range of motion.
Diagnosis
To check your pain and to evaluate the range of motion of your shoulder your doctor will ask you to move the shoulder in certain ways. You will be asked to relax your muscles while your doctor moves the arm. The doctor may also inject your shoulder with numbing medicine to determine your range of motion. Frozen shoulder can be detected by signs and symptoms but your doctor may also require an X-ray or MRI.
Treatment
When you observe symptoms of the frozen shoulder you must visit an orthopedic doctor as soon as possible for physical examination. As per your condition, the doctor will recommend the following:
- Medication – For the time being you will be prescribed pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs to ease your pain.
- Therapy – A therapist will help you with a range of motion exercises to recover. It is very important to stay committed to the therapies for a timely recovery.
- Surgical and Other procedures – If your frozen shoulder doesn’t get better within 12 to 18 months your doctor may suggest from among the following:
- Joint distension – In this process, sterile water is injected into the joint capsule that helps in stretching the tissue providing ease to move the joint.
- Steroid injections – Corticosteroids when injected into the shoulder joint helps in decreasing the pain and improving shoulder mobility.
- Shoulder manipulation – This process is done after giving you anesthesia. Once you are unconscious and feel no pain your doctor will move the shoulder joint in different directions to loosen the tissues.
- Surgery – It is rare but had to be done if nothing else works. It is done to remove the scar tissue and adhesions from the shoulder joint. It is done with light, tubular instruments that are inserted through small incisions.
Take away
You must continue to use the involved shoulder as per pain and the range of motion. To relieve the pain, you can also apply heat or cold to it. Remember to give a detailed description of your symptoms. Informing your doctor about any previous medical problems to you, your family, or siblings is also important.
