• A 17-year-old boy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right leg in 2015.
  • The tumor was then remove and an implant was fitted inside his leg followed by chemotherapy.
  • In 2016, he met with an accident thereby contracting infection in the affected leg.
  • Though the infected implant was removed and a rod was inserted in stead, the wound did not heal as pus trickled down the cavity.
  • Multiple opinions indicated an amputation for his condition.
  • Doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun, thereafter, performed a two stage surgical procedure to restore his leg.
  • In the first phase of the 16 hour long surgery the infected implant, dead bones and affected tissues were removed.
  • The second phase of the surgery included recreation of the leg bone with the help of the fibula bone from the other leg along with its muscles, nerve, blood vessels and skin.
