Arthrodesis is the process of fusion of two or more bones in joint. In this process the diseased cartilage is removed the bone ends are cut off and the two ends of bones are fused with one solid bone with one metal internal fixation.
The most common point where arthrodesis are located are the wrist, knee, hip or spine and the actual fusion is done by various methods such as use of surgical pins or straps.
Arthrodesis is used to treat severe arthritis pain, in this procedure the two bones are weld together which makes up the aching joint, this procedure causes bone to become solid which can reduce your pain.
Arthrodesis is being used to treat joint fractures, arthritis and some other conditions which affects the mobility of joint it can be a viable solution if pain is not managed by any other treatment.
Arthrodesis patients are those patient who are having so much pain that their symptoms disrupts their lives and the pain killers are not going to affect it.
Patient can get relief from the fused joint and they can bear weight without pain and are able to do good amount of work.

There are several ways of performing Arthrodesis and the method selected to do the procedure depends on various factors such as overall health of patient and the surgeon opinion. In one procedure bone grafting is done where bone tissue is taken from another part of patient body this is called as autograft. In other procedure the synthetically manufactured donor bone tissues are being used.
It will take around ten months to recover from surgery and the patient can experience some improvement one year after the surgery.

Arthrodesis risk includes breakage of metal implants, failure of the fusion site, infection and in some case there can be pain at the site of bone fusion which is also a rare complication.
