Some of the symptoms of Arytenoidectomy are hoarseness, noisy breathing, loss of vocal pitch, choking or coughing while swallowing food, drink, inability of speak loudly, loss of gag reflex.
Bilateral vocal immobility are caused due to bilateral neurogenic palsy, fixation of cricoarythenoid joint, laryngeal synechia.
Arytenoidectomy is a safe, complete and terminal treatment of BVFI for ensuring proper breathing.
In the process of Arytenoidectomy the vocal folds are cut or narrowed and the arytenoids is cut to make sure that the width of airway in throat is widened and the space is sufficient for breathing.
A partial arytenoidectomy takes about 1 hour to perform and a total arytenoidectomy takes 50 minutes to perform.
Arytenoidectomy is done by Pulmologist or by general surgeon.
Arytenoidectomy is done under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation, mostly using carbon dioxide laser. If the preexisting tracheostomy is not present then intubation is done with a 5.0 or 5.5 laser-safe endotracheal tube and the larynscope is suspended and angled toward the operative site.
If your vocal cords has been affected during the procedure allow your voice to rest for 3 days and if the nodules or lesions has been removes then you may allow you should allow your voice to rest for upto 2 weeks.
It will take around six weeks to completely recover from Arytenoidectomy, you may need four to six weeks so that your voice is completely recovered.
