Tissue expanders are the temporary and empty implants which are being placed under the skin and with time it is slowly being filled with saline or carbon dioxide gas.
Tissue expanders just look like breast implant even though it has got thick outer shell than breast implant one port is seen on the front of the expander.
Tissue expanders are being used for breast reconstruction after surgery. Tissue expansion can also be used for repairing skin which has been damaged because of accidents, surgery, congenital abnormalities or any other cosmetic procedure
A placement tissue expander is an empty implant which the surgeon places below the skin and with time the surgeon fills it with saline or carbon dioxide through a self sealing valve so that the skin grows by stretching and expanding.
Some of the benefits of this procedure are there are less chances of tissue dying, scars are less apparent, gives perfect match to the skin color.
Tissue expanders are being placed by making a pocket behind your breast skin, it is just like a breast implant but it has a valve which may be used for filling it with sterile salt water.
Tissue expander surgery will take about one hour to complete and it needs one to two night stay in hospital after your mastectomy.
Your surgeon will prescribe you with all the instructions needed for the surgery based on the procedure such as the purpose of procedure, is there any other procedure to be done along with surgery, type of anaesthesia needed
In this surgery a pocket is being created below the skin or the muscle to insert a silicone balloon so that the breast tissue can be expanded. As the expanders fill, they will stretch the skin and cause new skin to grow.
It will take around 2-6 months for your skin to stretch after breast reconstruction surgery.
Tissue expanders can be painful because of the stretching involved in it there are various other ways of dealing with the discomfort as the process or breast reconstruction starts.
If a person undergoes separate breast removal and tissue expansion procedures, they can expect to return to their normal activities within a few weeks of getting the expanders. But it may take 4-6 weeks before to do strenuous activity.
The main side effect using a tissue expander is that it may leak while it is inside the body. There is also a chance of infection, particularly a few weeks after the initial surgery.
You should contact your doctor if you are noticing any signs such as fever, a foul or strong smell from incision site, swelling or severe bruising.
