Everything You Need to Know About Tympanoplasty Treatment: Q&A

Before the Procedure (11 Questions):

While surgery for eardrum perforation or hearing reconstruction is elective, surgery for squamous variant or “unsafe ear” must not be deferred as it is a progressive disease and can lead to ear or brain complications in absence of definitive treatment.

Clinically examined by an otologist/ENT surgeon followed by Examination on under microscope, Audiometry and High resolution computed tomography of the temporal bone.

Hospital stay would be for 1-2 days.

Not all types of hearing losses are reversible. If the hearing loss is because of damage in the inner ear then it may NOT be revered. But hearing loss because of eardrum only, should be reversed.

Yes, ear discharge post tympanoplasty is stopped.

No, tympanoplasty is not a major surgery it is just a minor surgery procedure. In this surgery the edges of the holes of ears are irritated with an instrument or mild acid and then a paper patch is being placed over the hole.

Tympanoplasty is the surgery which involves repairing of the eardrum, the eardrum is the thin layer of tissue which vibrates in response to sound.

Tympanoplasty is the surgery which is being done for repairing the hole in eardrum. The surgery is an outpatient procedure which is done under general anaesthesia.

Tympanoplasty is needed when the hole present in eardrum does not close itself. This procedure is done to improve hearing and preventing water from going into the middle ear.

Tympanoplasty can be repaired by a simple endoscopic procedure, like other cosmetic surgeries this process is very less invasive and there is no need of any major incision or removing the tissues.

Ear problems does not recur in 99% of the patient after surgery.

During the Procedure (4 Questions):

Surgery lasts for less than an hour.

It will take around two to three hours to complete tympanoplasty.

Usually the procedure is being done by otologist or by a general surgeon.

Tympanoplasty procedure is being done under general anaesthesia. First a small incision is being made behind the ear, the eardrum is being moved forward and it is then exposed carefully at last the eardrum is being lifted up.

Post the Procedure (10 Questions):

Avoid water sport for at least 4-6 weeks.

This depends on your pre-operative hearing level. Certain hearing loss can be corrected in the same or second surgery whereas some kinds of hearing loss involving inner ear may not be reversible.

While a normal follow up after tympanoplasty or mastoidectomy could all be 4-8 weeks with native ENT surgeon, we recommend a lifelong follow up for patients needing radical or open cavity mastoidectomy. The large cavity status post-operatively makes such patientsprone to occasional discharge and wax or fungal collec on that can be managed in outpa ent using ear suction cleaning and relevant anti -bacterial or anti -fungal ear drops.

There are multiple methods of hearing improvement. These range from use of hearing aids in the elderly or surgical reconstruction of hearing mechanism using either of these methods: . Ossiculoplasty: Reconstruction of middle ear ossicles/bones using titanium implants. b. Bone anchored hearing implants: For patients with open cavities or radical mastoidectomies on both sides. c. Active middle ear implants (Vibrant Soundbridge): For patients with mixed hearing loss with both conducive and sensorineural hearing loss component and when patients are not comfortable wearing hearing aids. d. Cochlear implants: To correct severe to profound hearing loss not amenable to any other non-surgical or surgical modality.

You can go back to your home on the next day after the procedure and you will be able to return to your work within 1-2 days of treatment.

You are not allowed to drive till one week of surgery, you have to wear eyeglasses as soon as surgical dressing is removed.

Complete recovery from tympanoplasty will take around two to three days. Your hearing may be worse than it was before. In your first visit your doctor will clean your ear canal with vacuum for inspecting the reconstructed eardrum.

You should avoid doing any strenuous activity for minimum of  2 weeks after surgery.  If you want to go to some far place you can drive within 2 days. You should avoid driving over high mountains or flying in between 2 days or 4 weeks after surgery.

Failure from tympanoplasty may occur because of the infection during the healing period or from getting into ear or due to the displacement of graft after surgery.

If you have some of the complications such as abnormal taste or dryness present in your mouth or any sensation of noise present in your ear, you may experience facial paralysis due to damage of nerve, after few hours of surgery you may have a feeling of dizziness.  Then there are chances that tympanoplasty has failed.
